Here are some tips on how to care for your fresh flowers.
Prepare your vase – Make sure that the vase you are going to put them is clean. Use diluted bleach to clean it and allow to air dry – this will kill any bacteria.
Fill the vase with warm water as flowers take in warm water more efficiently. Allow the water to settle so any air bubbles can rise up. Air trapped at the bottom of the vase can hinder a flowers uptake of water.
Add flower food to the water and stir gently.
Prepare the stems – Remove any greenery that will sit below the water line – this helps prevent introduction and build up of bacteria. Cut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife or scissors – This maximises the area available to uptake water, and keeps the stems from laying flat at the bottom of the vase. Once cut put the stems straight into water to prevent them taking in air.
Location – Try to avoid placing the flowers in direct sunlight or near a heat source such as a radiator. When flowers get too hot, they release more water than they can drink and wilt. Also try to avoid placing them near fruit or vegetables, as when they ripen they release gases which are poisonous to cut flowers.
Ongoing care – Remove any dead blooms and foliage. Change the water every few days.
If you follow these easy steps you should get the best out of your flowers, giving you longer to enjoy them.
